Canucks Going Back to Black: Retro Skate Jerseys Return

Vancouver Canucks Road Uniform 1992-93

Will this ever be a sight for sore eyes, the Vancouver Canucks have announced today that the black flying skate uniforms worn originally from 1989 through 1997 will be making a comeback in 2016.

Yes, it’s now the right time to dust off your old Bure #10.

As part of the celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of the Canucks home arena, General Motors Place Rogers Arena, for one night only (sad emoji) the team will take to the ice in the same black, yellow, and red uniforms they wore when the arena originally opened… of course, the Canucks never actually wore the black jersey at this arena before as white was worn at home in those days.

The game is set for Saturday, February 13, 2016 when the Canucks take on the Toronto Maple Leafs and probably will be broadcast nationally on Hockey Night in Canada.

The flying skate logo replaced the blue and green hockey stick logo in the late 1970s (something about the Canucks and building brands around hockey equipment), the logo didn’t appear on the chest of the jersey at first, just the sleeve, instead the team opted for a giant “V” both for Victory and Vancouver (silly uniform explanations aren’t exclusive to the 2010s, kids) on the front. In 1986 the logo was moved to the chest accompanied by another set of “V”s, this time on the shoulders, those were removed in 1989 to create the set they’ll be throwing back to in February.

Several Canucks greats wore this set, Hall of Famer Pavel Bure is one, others include current team president Trevor Linden, Kirk McLean, Alexander Mogilny, Gino Odjick, and Geoff Courtnall.

I just hope they go all out and include the “Canuck Place” charity patch on the shoulder too.
