The Colorado Avalanche officially unveiled their new alternate uniform this afternoon during a team practice, several weeks after the jersey had been leaked by an international version of the NHL’s online shop. The jersey is identical to what we had seen in that leak but this is our first look at the full uniform.
“The goal of the uniform was to celebrate both the identity of the State of Colorado and our history of hockey”, explained the Avalanche via a video unveiling the new look, and that is very apparent to any fan of either hockey or sports logos in general.
On the front of the new jersey is a mountain peak with a “CO” insignia, that “CO” is taken straight from the Colorado state flag (which appears undoctored on the shoulder). The general feel of that logo is of the 1976-82 Colorado Rockies, the only other NHL team to call the state home, the Rockies relocated to New Jersey during the summer of 1982 where they still continue as the Devils to this day.
“The crest is a marriage of state pride and heritage, a modern take on one of the greatest sports logos of all-time”, says the voice in the video, it sure is… a shame the Avs don’t use the stronger colour scheme of the Rockies but I’ll accept this compromise to get this logo back on the ice.
In addition to the “CO” logo and the shoulder flag the colours also pay homage to the state, the navy base is meant to give the jersey an arctic, mountain feel and the silver trim is a nod to the Colorado Silver Rush of the 1880s, while the burgundy, of course, is the Avalanche primary team colour.
Colorado will wear the new uniforms fourteen times in 2015-16, this first time later this month. It replaces the baby blue jersey with the “COLORADO” diagonal wordmark across the front as the alternate jersey. The full schedule of games the uniform will be worn listed below:
