Alright Boston, I see what you did there… and I like it. A lot.
The Boston Bruins unveiled their new 2016 NHL Winter Classic outdoor game uniform earlier today at a season ticket holder event, the jersey is based heavily off of their expansion season design from 1924-25.
Colours have been modernized as black is the base colour of the jersey, the team used brown for that first season, two gold horizontal stripes are on each arm and one across the waist. The retro logo featuring a bear with “BOSTON” arched above and “BRUINS” below on a horizontal line is on the chest.
Player numbers are in your standard hockey jersey semi-serif block lettering, names and numbers are in “heritage” white or cream. Numbers on the arms are not gigantic (but, but, it’s an outdoors game!) they are positioned in between the two stripes creating a fairly unique look in today’s NHL.
So what was I alluding to, exactly, in that opening statement? It’s the collars.
Yes, the collar, so simple, so obvious, yet we haven’t seen the likes of this in years. Designed to look more like an old hockey “sweater”, take a look:
They’re not quite ready to go full 1920s turtleneck, but we’ll take what we can get.
The application of the crest also features a retro touch:
As you can see the material has a felt-like appearance, even the bear has a furry material. Love it!
That new spoked-“B” logo we’d seen in the past few weeks is not present on the jersey, not even as a shoulder patch. The logo is a part of the overall branding package, however, although it’s still not quite clear how it will be used, if at all, on the uniforms.
The 2016 Winter Classic logo appears on one shoulder as a patch, the other shoulder is blank.
