Happy New Year! The National Hockey League kicked off 2016 with their annual outdoor “Winter Classic” game, this year taking place at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts between the Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins.

For the matchup this year the teams wore “fauxback” uniforms, a term we use to describe a uniform that looks like it was designed in the past but is actually a modern creation.

The Canadiens wore a white version of their familiar horizontally-striped, classic red home uniform with a much thicker blue stripe across. On the front, their logo from the early-1920s, each arm featuring a globe patch which was worn on their chest in 1924 in celebration of a Stanley Cup victory the year prior.

Boston’s uniform is much more loyal to the original design. The Bruins are wearing the uniforms from their inaugural season of 1924-25 (the first to feature a U.S.-based team in the NHL), the difference between what Boston wearing this afternoon and what they wore 90 years ago? The colour of the jersey. Originally the team wore brown, in 2016 it’s black, they simply took their modern colour scheme and applied it to the old uniform. The numbers are pretty sweet too, featuring a stitch pattern to really amp up that old-timey look.

Let’s take a look at some photos from the game to get a sense of how these two designed matched-up in-action:
