Detroit Lions could be in line for uniform, logo overhaul for 2017

Recently, Detroit Lions president Rod Wood took to the radio airwaves to talk about the Lions and, specifically, what the team will look like when it comes to new uniforms (including alternate uniform rumors) and maybe even new colors, as well.

Basically, according to the quote below, everything is on the table — from a shift in color scheme to a complete overhaul of the look, from the logo to the uniforms. Here’s more from Wood (via CBSSports.com):

During an interview with WMGC-FM (105.1) last week, Wood said that there’s a chance that the Lions could be changing their color scheme.

“I do want to look at our entire uniform color scheme and look, and that’s something that’s also on the table, maybe for an update of the regular uniform for 2017,” Wood said, via the Detroit Free Press.

That probably doesn’t mean the Lions will be going from blue to red, but it could mean that the team decides to go with a different shade of blue. The Lions have basically been wearing Honolulu Blue and silver since the team’s inception in 1930. The Lions did wear an alternate black uniform for several games starting in 2005. The team also wore a maroon uniform in 1948.

As for other changes, a caller asked Wood during the show if the team’s logo might also be undergoing a makeover.

“I think everything is up for review with the uniform, but it does take a lot of lead time to make any change like that,” Wood said. “So I’ll certainly consider it.”

I definitely wouldn’t expect to see the Lions switch from their classic Honolulu Blue and Silver look, but considering the changes that have been going on in the NFL (with the Browns specifically coming to mind, here), a complete uniform overhaul is definitely in the cards here.

Even though they added black to their color scheme for no reason other than to add black to their color scheme, the Lions have one of the more traditional looks in the NFL and it’s one that doesn’t necessarily need a huge overhaul, in my eyes. A few tweaks would be nice, but Nike and the Lions would benefit from refraining from “going crazy,” per se, with a new look.

Also of note: Wood also addressed the rumors of their alternate uniform for 2016-17. Apparently the Lions’ alternate uniform for next season could potentially be part of the Color Rush program, which will be coming back for the 2016-17 season. If that’s the case, then you might want to get ready to see the Lions in all-Honolulu Blue during a random Thursday night game. I will say that I’d prefer that over an all-silver or all-black look. That’s for sure.

So, what do you guys make of this news? Do you think that the Lions really need a complete makeover? Do you think that they’re a good fit for the Color Rush?
