2016 MLS Kit Roundup

New MLS Logo 2015
Alright, folks. We’ve covered most of the new MLS kit reveals for the 2016 season, so now it’s time to take a look at what the entire league looks like. For a basic look at what every team in MLS will be wearing, the league itself has given us a look at every single kit. What you’re going to get from us are shots of the kits in action. Surprisingly, we’ve already seen a good chunk of these kits in action — either this season or last season, so there’s plenty to talk about here. Let’s not waste any more time so that we can get started with taking a look at what the 20 MLS clubs will be looking like this season!

Chicago Fire

The Fire debuted their new home shirt during their home opener against New York City FC. They’re also bringing back their secondary and third kit from last season. I’m not a big fan of the third shirt, but the away shirt is solid and it’s definitely nice to see the Fire bring the white stripe back to their home kit.

Colorado Rapids

Colorado’s new home kit was on display in their home opener against the LA Galaxy. The uniform is extremely similar to their previous home kit, with the main difference coming in the new placement of the Adidas stripes and a different sock design. Meanwhile, they kept their state flag-inspired away kit from 2015.

Columbus Crew SC

Yes, they’re seriously wearing those monstrosities. In fact, the Crew have worn them for both games so far this season. What’s worse is that this kit is replacing their awesome yellow kits from last season, which means that their black kit has been promoted to the primary kit. The black kit is still solid, but the weird away kit is dragging the entire set down, in my opinion.

DC United

MLS’s original United got a new logo in the offseason, and they also got a new home kit as well — and I’m sure that they’ve fixed the small error that the shirts had when they were initially released. The new home kit made its official debut in competitive action during the CONCACAF Champions League. Meanwhile, the away kit from last season has been updated with the new crest.

FC Dallas

The Hoops have gone with sublimated hoops on their home shirt for a second consecutive kit cycle. What’s new is that they’ve gone with white shorts on the home kit, and when you combine it with the red socks, it actually makes for a pretty attractive kit. They’ve retained their away kit from 2015.

Houston Dynamo

Their new clash kit was on display for their home opener, and it looks just as good as advertised. I’m still not a huge fan of the gradient on their home shirt, but this is definitely one of the better sets of kits in MLS right now.

Los Angeles Galaxy

The model club of MLS updated their sponsorship logo for both kits, including their new home kit for 2016. Also, the team has a habit of wearing blue shorts for their visits to Colorado over the years, and they broke out the blue shorts once again for this year’s away trip against the Rapids.

Montreal Impact

L’Impact had their home opener in the Olympic Stadium in Montreal, and that was also where they debuted their sparkling new home uniform. I’ve said before that I’m a huge fan of the Impact wearing black-and-blue stripes on their home shirt, so I’m pretty happy with how the Impact look right now. They also kept their solid white kit from last season, so the Impact are definitely top-tier in the league when it comes to kits right now.

New England Revolution

The Revs wore their interesting red-white-and-green away shirt for the season opener at Houston (who wore their away kit at home. It was a strange-looking game.), and wore their new home kit for the home opener. Two fairly basic uniforms here, and I’m just going to use this space to once again say that they really, really, really need to update their logo.

New York City FC

The co-tenants of Yankee Stadium have entered their second season in MLS with a new away kit. While it looks weird on paper, it’s actually not the worst thing in the world in action. Meanwhile, they kept their Manchester City Jr. home kit from last season. Derisive nickname aside, that’s actually not a bad thing because it’s actually a really good-looking kit.

NYCFC H

New York Red Bulls

Meanwhile in New Jersey, the New York Metros have kept their home kits from 2015. They do have a new away kit that they have yet to wear this season, so we’ve got a photo from their promotional shoot as a placeholder.

Orlando City SC

The Lions stayed in lockstep with their expansion brothers in New York by keeping their home kit from last season and unveiling a new away kit. The away uniform is mostly white with purple sleeves and a 3D/chrome crest to boot. I’m not a big fan of the faux collar look that they’ve got going on with this shirt, but it doesn’t ruin the look for me.

Philadelphia Union

Philadelphia’s new home kit is pretty simple, but the devils is in the details. The regular gold stripe that goes down the middle of the Union’s shirts has a subtle snakeskin pattern on it. Their vanilla away kit from last season has been retained.

Portland Timbers

Their amazing third kit from last season (which they wore on a near-regular basis in 2015) has been dumped. I’m sad about that, but their home kit isn’t too bad, so the loss isn’t the worst thing in the world. Meanwhile, the simplified crest that’s present on this shirt is now their new primary logo. Additionally, Alaska Airlines updated their logo, and the new logo is present on the Timbers’ shirts. Also, Portland has a new Rose City alternate, and two pairs of shorts to go with it as well.

Real Salt Lake

All the way back in January, RSL was the first club to unveil their new kit for the 2016 season. Although they initially unveiled the new kits wearing all-red, there were rumors that we were going to see RSL bring back blue shorts. We haven’t seen that yet, and I think that they’ll probably keep on wearing all-red as their primary look.

San Jose Earthquakes

The Earthquakes finally got a shirt sponsor, which means that for the first time in the history of the league, every team in MLS has a shirt sponsor. The sponsor was the only major change to their home kit from last season, and the new clash kit is a tribute to the history of soccer in San Jose. The team used a preseason intrasquad scrimmage to show off the new look.

Seattle Sounders FC

For the first time, the Sounders are going with blue sleeves on their normally all-rave green home kit. It’s actually a welcome change of pace in my view, and the Sounders continue to have one of the best looks in the league. They also have the option of wearing rave green shorts with the shirt, which they chose to do in their first away game of the season. We haven’t seen their secondary shirts yet, but the Sunders did wear their blue third shirt for their trip to the infamous Estadio Azteca to face Club America in the CONCACAF Champions League.

Sporting Kansas City

SKC, in my opinion, have the best uniform set in Major League Soccer. Their primary kit from last season was already a great choice, but now they’ve complimented it with what’s probably now the best secondary shirt in the league. Combine that with those striking white uniforms (even if the details and numbers are honestly very hard to see), and you’ve got a solid combo of shirts. No matter who SKC is playing this season, it’ll be exciting to watch if only because of the kit selection that they have.

Toronto FC

The Reds’ latest away kit adds blue to their color scheme for the first time ever, and it’s definitely not a bad look for Toronto. In fact, it’s a really good looking kit. I still can’t decide whether or not I like it better with blue shorts or red shorts, but I figure that they’ll probably wear both combos at some point in the future. Their solid all-red away strip is unchanged from last season.

Toronto FC A

Vancouver Whitecaps

The Whitecaps have always had a solid combo of kits since entering the league, and this season is no different. Their sea-to-sky away kit managed to buck the trend of gradients looking bad on soccer shirts. Combine that with their already good home shirt, and you’ve got a very nice set of kits for British Columbia’s MLS representatives.
