The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced that they will be wearing their extremely popular throwback alternate uniforms for every home game during the upcoming 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The news comes on the heels of rumours the club will be switching to the retro look full-time for next season.
“The team did really well with it, the fans loved it… We have a good record in the gold too.” – Penguins CEO David Morehouse to @Penguins
The club is referring it as the “Gold Rush” for the Stanley Cup, the Penguins refer to the shade of yellow used on their retro uniforms as “Pittsburgh Gold” while the more modern shade is known as “Vegas Gold”.
Fans will be given “Pittsburgh Gold” t-shirts and rally towels to create what I can only imagine would look like a swirling sea of yellow… I mean, at least the uniforms will look pretty great.
The team is also using the throwback logo throughout their website in place of the modern, and still official, primary logo. The old logo also appears on the Penguins version of their 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs logo.
Pittsburgh originally wore this shade of gold on their uniforms beginning in 1968 at the start of their second season, at the time it only appeared on the triangle of their chest logo. Following the Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl win in January 1980 (which followed the Pirates World Series win the previous October) the Penguins changed to black and Pittsburgh gold full-time making the switch mid-way through the 1979-80 season. The gold was lightened to the current shade first as an alternate in 2000 and then full-time in 2002.
