When the Denver Zephyrs moved to New Orleans before the 1993 season, they kept the team’s nickname, which derived from a steel passenger train that ran between Denver and Chicago. While New Orleans had no connection to the train, it did have its own Zephyr—an iconic roller coaster at a local amusement park. (We wrote about the origins of the Zephyrs’ nickname in our Story Behind the Nickname series.)
After playing as the Zephyrs since 1985 in Denver and New Orleans, it turns out that this season will be the last with that name. The team is conducting a name-the-team contest at zephyrsbaseball.com from April 25 through May 6, and will work with Brandiose to develop a new identity for the 2017 season.
While the official name-the-team contest doesn’t start until Monday, we encourage you to leave your suggestions in the comments below.
