The Arizona Diamondbacks knew some out there in the baseball world would be throwin’ shade when they introduced their new uniforms this past off-season. Spoiler alert… they were right.
“There’s going to be some people that don’t like them, this is a really different look when it comes to Major League Baseball.”, Diamondbacks president and CEO Derrick Hall told SportsLogos.Net back in December. “It’s out there enough that you open yourself up to criticism, but at the end of the day if you do what you think is right for baseball, is right for the team, you just hold your head high and don’t look back.”
Featuring fades and panel designs never before seen on a Major League uniform, the new uniforms were designed with heavy input from the players who, we were told at the time, insisted on leaving those controversial shoulder designs you see on the standard home white and road super-dark greys.
There’s also heavy hate about the sheer amount of uniforms the team has in their rotation, as you can see in the image above (and this doesn’t even account for all the possible cap/jersey combos).
Now here one month into the new season, the DBacks are having some fun with all that criticism, producing a video featuring players and staff reading and reacting to some of the more negative social media posts about the uniforms:
There’s several more, including a Tweet read by designer of the uniforms (who is not named during the video, but does show her face). You can check it out for yourself here:
We’ve gotten lots of love for the new uniforms, but that doesn’t mean everyone’s a fan… #MeanTweetshttps://t.co/1pXblFOmLv
