Riddell gives Houston Astros their own football helmets

If you’ve spent some time over at the concepts section of our lovely forums over at the CCSLC, then one of the more popular concepts includes “crossover” designs, which is basically imagining what would happen if you took an identity from one sport and placed it in another sport. You rarely see this actually applied in real life, but thanks to Riddell and the Houston Astros, we’ve now got a taste of seeing what it would be like if the Astros were a football team.

Last season, Astros outfielder George Springer inadvertently started a tradition by randomly showing up to spring training wearing a football helmet. The trend spread through the clubhouse, and now it’s gotten to the point where the players wear football helmets during interviews in the locker room.

Football helmet manufacturers Riddell noticed this and decided that it was a golden opportunity to give the Astros their very own football helmets.

Here’s the design on paper. I’m a big fan of the Tequila Sunrise striping being used on the helmet, which puts this over the top when it comes to the “cool” factor in my eyes.

Although most of the Astros wore helmets for sentimental reasons (mostly related to fan allegiance), I’m sure that the players are probably pleased to have their very own helmets with their logo and unique striping on their lids. What do you all think of this? Do you like how the helmets turned out here? Which baseball logo/identity do you think would look best on a football helmet?
