Maple Leafs Unveil 100th Anniversary Logo, Announce Centennial Plans

Leafs 100 feat

The Toronto Maple Leafs today announced their plans for their upcoming 100th anniversary season, a celebration which began with the unveiling of a new heritage themed logo back in February, continuing with the new uniforms last month, and a 100th anniversary logo this morning.

Throughout the 2016-17 season each Leafs player will wear the 100th anniversary logo as a small decal on the left side of the back of their helmet (not as a patch on the jersey), the logo features the shape of the new Leafs logo in silver with a bit of a chrome treatment to it. The new team wordmark from within the leaf has been removed from this logo and replaced with a “100” in the new team font.

This logo is already featured on many pieces of merchandise available online and will continue to be so over the course of the next season and a half. The team is expecting to see their 100th anniversary celebrations through until December 19, 2017 which would be 100 years to the day of the first game of Toronto’s NHL team.

“The Maple Leafs Centennial Anniversary comes at a very special time in the team’s history,” said Leafs president and alternate governor Brendan Shanahan. “It allows us to look back and celebrate the great players, accomplishments and special memories of one of the most important franchises in hockey, but at the same time, look ahead to the next 100 years and the start of an exciting new chapter in team history.”

There were two additional uniform related news items as part of the announcement today…

Confirming what we reported several months ago, the team will wear a Toronto St Pats throwback uniform. The uniform will be worn once in 2016-17 on March 18th against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Special uniforms will be worn by the team for the outdoor Centennial Classic on January 1, 2017 at BMO Field in Toronto. An alumni game between Leafs and Detroit Red Wings players will be held prior to the Centennial Classic which will feature the 100th season logo on the Leafs alumni uniforms.

Other items of note:

There will be an update to the design of the “honoured numbers” banners which have been hanging in the rafters of the Air Canada Centre since it opened in 1999. The existing 18 banners will be delivered to the respective players home town.

Three statues will be added to “Legends Row” outside the arena: Dave Keon, Turk Broda, and Tim Horton.

A committee will determine and announce the 100 greatest players in Leafs history during the season, while the NHL will announce its 100 best players in the first half of the league’s history (1917-67) at the Centennial Classic.

“We’re excited to share some of the initiatives that will make up the Maple Leafs Centennial anniversary but there will also be many surprises throughout the season that our fans can look forward to, including a historic opening night celebration,” said Shanahan. “We look forward to sharing this special year with our fans.”
