As of right now, New York City FC are currently sitting atop the Eastern Conference standings, and one of their marquee players is currently sitting atop the jersey sales rankings as well. NYCFC midfielder Andrea Pirlo is a worldwide star, and some more evidence of that is the act that he’s currently leading MLS in jersey sales.
The Washington Post’s Steven Goff shared the information via Twitter, and here’s a look at the full list:
A few notes:
– Although it isn’t a huge shock to see that Clint Dempsey is near the top as the highest ranked American on this list, it is interesting to see that Jordan Morris’ jersey is so high. Sounders fans (and fans of US Soccer in general) have really taken to the young prospect.
– Plenty of designated players on the list, such as Kaka, David Villa, Steven Gerrard, Didier Drogba, and Sebastian Giovinco — just to name a few. Part of the reason why players like these have been brought into the league is to move the needle from a commercial standpoint, and they appear to be doing just that.
– Interestingly enough, current top teams like the Philadelphia Union, Colorado Rapids, Real Salt Lake, and FC Dallas have no representation on this list. Maybe winning isn’t everything?
It’s an interesting list, and it should be fun to see how much this list changes once we get to the end of the season. What do you all think of this? Have you bought any of the players’ jerseys on this list?
