The Canadian Football League announced this past weekend that the 105th Grey Cup will be played at TD Place Stadium in Ottawa, Ontario on November 26, 2017. The choice of Canada’s capital as host of the CFL’s championship game coincides with the 150th anniversary of the nation next year.
Along with the announcement came the introduction of the logo for the game, the logo for-the-most-part follows the new template introduced for the 104th Grey Cup which will be played this autumn in Toronto.
The logo is in the shape of the new CFL league logo with the Grey Cup in silver on it. The name of the game is laid on the cup, bi-lingual, in graphite block lettering, a red maple leaf with “OTTAWA” below in red off to the side.
Peeking out the bottom of the shield is a silhouette of the Centre Block of Ottawa’s Parliament Hill and it’s famous Peace Tower, this building would be Canada’s equivalent to the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington.
“We are thrilled to host the 2017 Grey Cup and cap off a year of Canada 150 celebrations in the nation’s capital,” said Jeff Hunt, President of OSEG, the Ottawa RedBlacks’ parent company. “I’d like to thank the CFL Board of Governors and Commissioner [Jeffrey] Orridge for giving us this amazing opportunity and I promise CFL fans across the country that we’ll put on a great show and welcome them to Ottawa with open arms.”
There are some slight differences between the 2016 and new 2017 logos, for one you’ll notice the 2017 version no longer shows the year of the game – perhaps going the Super Bowl route and just referring to the edition of the game rather than the season in which it was played. Also you’ll notice the addition of a maple leaf, because Canada:
The French in the Ottawa logo has been enlarged, perhaps because Ottawa is generally regarded as a bi-lingual city while Toronto is not. The position and colour of the host city name has also been modified. As was the case for Grey Cup 104 coming up later in 2016, the logo and game are both presented by Shaw, a Canadian telecommunications company headquartered in Calgary, Alberta.
