SWB RailRiders to adopt Pierogies nickname for a day

Pierogies-header

The Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, Triple-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, will join an increasingly long line of minor league baseball teams donning promotional uniforms based on food. August 26, the RailRiders will go as the Scranton Wilkes-Barre Pierogies, an homage to the doughy Polish dumpling popular in eastern Europe.

The RailRiders play in northeastern Pennsylvania, about 120 from two of the three largest Polish populations in the US, New York City and Philadelphia. (Chicago is second on that list, after New York and before Philadelphia.)

The Pierogies join the Fresno Grizzlies (Tacos), Brooklyn Cyclones (Coney Island Franks), and their Pennsylvania neighbors, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Cheesesteaks), among others, as teams to adopt local delicacies as alternate identities.

I’m sure some people will roll their eyes at another promotional uniform in the minors, but from what little we’ve seen of this one so far, it looks like it’s done well.
