Next season, MLS will see two new expansion teams enter the league. We’ve known for a long time now that those two teams would be Atlanta United FC and Minnesota United FC, with the latter making the jump from the North American Soccer League. There were questions, though, as to whether or not Minnesota United would keep their name and logo, with the name coming under major consideration since this would make it three teams with the moniker of “United” in MLS — DC United being the “original United” of the league.
Well, that speculation has been put to rest after the club formally announced that they would be keeping their name and logo ahead of their jump to MLS. They emphatically made it known via their twitter account this evening.
Additionally, Brian Straus of Sports Illustrated shared the team’s logo. Other than using “MNUFC” to replace “Minnesota United FC” on their (beautiful) crest, their logo will be the exact same as it was in the NASL — even including the star that represents the club’s championship from 2011 back when the club was known as NSC Minnesota Stars.
Now, while there was nothing stopping them from carrying over the logo, there was plenty of speculation as to whether or not they’d join Atlanta and D.C. in MLS’ “United” brigade. The speculation is over now, and according to reports from Straus, the club is extremely proud to be keeping their name.
Personally, I’m glad that they’re keeping this amazing logo as they begin their journey in Major League Soccer. It’s clearly one of the best logos in NASL, and it will be one of the best logos in MLS as well. It’ll be interesting to see what Adidas comes up with when it comes to kits as as well. Overall, there’s plenty to be excited about here if you’re a fan of Minnesota United and MLS, in general.
