Major League Baseball clubs will be paying their respects to the victims of the attacks of September 11, 2001 with a special on-field patch today.

In memory of the 15th anniversary of the attacks on New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania, all thirty MLB teams will be wearing a United States waving flag patch on the left side of their caps. The Toronto Blue Jays will also remember the Canadian victims of those attacks with a Canadian flag patch on the right side in addition to the American flag on the left.

Major League ballclubs have been acknowledging the anniversary of these attacks annually since 2002; in 2001 all teams wore U.S. flag patches on their caps and jerseys for the remainder of the season through the end of the World Series.

In addition to the flag patches on the caps games will be marked with pre-game ceremonies which will include a moment of silence. The “We Shall Not Forget” silhouetted batter ribbon (seen at the top of this post) will be displayed throughout ballparks, special lineup cards featuring this ribbon logo, and base jewels will be used in every MLB game played on the 11th.

MLB’s proceeds from the sales of these caps will be donated to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, the Pentagon Memorial, and to the Flight 93 Memorial.
