Flames Bring Back Retros as Alternate Uniform

Flames Alternate

The Calgary Flames have announced that their 1980s throwback look will be joining their uniform rotation as their official alternate get-up for the 2016-17 season.

Calgary originally wore these uniforms as their full-time road set beginning with their first season in Alberta following relocation from Atlanta, Georgia in 1980. They were worn throughout the 1980s, during their run to the 1986 Stanley Cup Final and again when they won it all in 1989 (this particular jersey is the one which was worn the night they raised the cup).

Calgary Flames 1989 Stanley Cup Champions

Calgary finally replaced this set for the 1994-95 season after 15 years. It has made numerous appearances in recent years as both a one-time throwback and a regular alternate. With its promotion to an “alternate uniform” title, this would signal the end to the scripted “CALGARY” jersey the team had worn as an alternate since 2013-14.

Here’s the full schedule of when the new retro/alternate set will be worn, thankfully there’s one against the Habs in there to re-create the 1986 and 1989 Cup Final uniform matchup.
