The National Hockey League is getting set to celebrate their 100th anniversary in 2017, today they kicked things off by announcing their plans for the big year-long birthday bash.
Part of those plans included three new logos: two for outdoor games in 2017, the Stadium Series and Centennial Classic, and the logo commemorating the 100th anniversary of the league.
We’ll kick things off with the centennial year logo (seen above).
The logo, designed by Fanbrandz features the current league shield and current league colours, there’s no hint of any of the league’s history in this mark (notably, no orange). The bevels and gradients found in the current shield are prevalent throughout the 100th anniversary logo, you can see the similar shading is used on the ‘100’ and the gradient within the ribbon surrounding the shield.
This logo will be used everywhere next year, including on in-game pucks:
The Centennial Classic will be held on New Years Day at BMO Field in Toronto, hard to believe that it’s the first outdoor NHL game ever played in the city. The Leafs will take on the Detroit Red Wings, a battle between two “Original Six” clubs and a rematch of their Winter Classic game played in Michigan back in 2014.
The logo features the 100th anniversary mark above the name of the event with Toronto’s CN Tower. Like the 100th anniversary mark, this logo is entirely black and silver.
Finally, the Stadium Series logo was also unveiled. The 2017 event will be held at Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field on February 25th between two “Expansion Six” teams, the Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers. The logo breaks from the previous Stadium Series’ template and puts the focus on Pittsburgh’s famous bridges and steel industry.
A complete list of the other non-logo related celebrations for the NHL’s centennial season below (from NHL press release):
NHL Centennial Truck Tour (Jan. 1 – Dec. 2017) – This will visit all NHL markets throughout the year and include a 53-foot museum truck with “an interactive interior with original video content, exclusive memorabilia, and fan activations.” Also, there will be another 53-foot truck that will hold a big video screen for viewing parties and appearance from current and former players. A synthetic ice rink will be available for youth games and clinics. Toronto will get the first look at the Centennial Truck during the outdoor game on New Year’s Day.
