Oklahoma City Thunder quietly drop navy alternates

The sea of “interesting” — if not flat-out ugly — NBA alternate uniforms just lost one of its biggest fish. Per Erik Horne of The Oklahoman, the Thunder have decided that it’s time to drop their navy alternate from their rather diverse set of uniforms. As a result, the Thunder are now down to four uniforms: Their home-and-away set, their white sleeved jerseys, and their “Sunset” orange alternates, which are probably the primary alternates now.

Horne also reported that the team didn’t give a reason why they dropped the alternates, so this is probably just a case of the team deciding that a particular look had run its course and just let it fall by the wayside. As a result, one of the league’s weirdest-looking uniforms is now on the shelf.

Personally, I’m glad that it’s gone. The Thunder already have major issues with their logos, and they didn’t need a wacky uniform continuing to bring down the rest of what was already a pretty bad visual identity. They still have a pretty bad sleeved uniform, but their orange alternate is at least passable, so there’s that. So, in my opinion, the Thunder improved their identity by subtraction.
