It’s become a tradition ’round the Garden State these last few years, in mid-March the New Jersey Devils break out the green and everyone smiles.
This year the Devils will wear their red-and-green retro uniforms on the day before St. Patrick’s Day, March 16th when they host the Philadelphia Flyers at the Prudential Center in Newark.
New Jersey will also wear a green warmup jersey before the game with an Irish tartan pattern on each sleeve and a shamrock on the shoulders, the logo on this warm up jersey is a re-coloured green and white version of the standard Devils crest.
Fans can get in on the fun if they arrive early enough, the first 9000 into the building will get a retro red-and-green Devils cap for free upon entry.
The Devils wore red and green during the first ten seasons following their relocation from Denver, CO to East Rutherford, NJ in 1982. The green was said to be a tribute to “The Garden State”, a nickname for New Jersey. In 1991/92 the green was replaced with black, the team won three Stanley Cups in the decade which followed the change basically cementing the Devils’ colour scheme for at least the next generation or two.
