The Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Indians will be marking the 100th anniversary of the 1917 Chicago White Sox World Championship by wearing these special throwback uniforms for their game on Saturday, July 29.
Chicago’s uniform is white with a stars-and-stripes themed “Sox” logo on the chest and an American flag on the sleeve, the jersey was adopted specially to be worn in the World Series that year in recognition of the U.S. soldiers fighting in The Great War over in Europe at the time (the first “stars and stripes” uniform?) The cap is without a logo, just pinstripes.
Cleveland is grey with black pinstripes and CLEVELAND arched across the front, the cap is black with a white “C”.
Both uniforms are fairly accurate representations of their 1917 versions, manufacturer logos aside.
“We have always treasured the memorable moments in White Sox history, so we wanted to create an opportunity for our fans to celebrate the 100th anniversary of our 1917 World Series Championship with us,” said Brooks Boyer, White Sox senior vice president of sales and marketing. “We are excited to transform the ballpark into a different era of White Sox baseball, from the uniforms on the field and in the stands to old-time music and entertainment. It will certainly be a fun day for all baseball fans to enjoy.”
As part of the “Turn Back the Clock” fun, popcorn and programs will be sold at throwback prices, each going for just a quarter, and all fans are being encouraged to dress in early 20th century appropriate attire so don’t forget your derbys, gentlemen.
