Sens Add Memorial Decal for Bryan Murray

The Ottawa Senators will be honouring the memory of their former head coach and general manager during the upcoming 2017-18 season.

Announced via their official social media accounts earlier today, the Senators will have a special memorial decal affixed to the back of their in-game helmets for the duration of the season. The decal is red, features Mr. Murray’s initials, his year of birth and death, as well as a summary of what he was to those who knew him best, “family man, friend, coach, and mentor”.

Murray lived a life of hockey behind the bench, taking his first job as a head coach in the Canadian junior leagues in 1976 at the age of 34, eventually climbing the ladder up to the WHL’s Regina Pats, the AHL’s Hershey Bears, and finally to the National Hockey League with the Washington Capitals just six years later in 1982. Murray stayed with the Caps for eight seasons winning the Jack Adams Award and guiding the club to the playoffs in each of his full seasons with the team. Stints as coach and general manager followed with the Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers (their first GM), and the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, two of those clubs advancing to the Stanley Cup Final during his time there. Murray joined the Senators following the 2004 season and stayed with the club right up through this past season.

Bryan Murray died during the off-season on August 12, 2017 in Ottawa from colon cancer, he was 74 years old.
