After a three year absence, the Philadelphia Wings are back in the National Lacrosse League.
As one of the original founding franchises of what was then the Eagle Box Pro Lacrosse League in 1986, the Wings played at Philadelphia’s Spectrum and then the Wells Fargo Center for nearly thirty years before relocating to Connecticut in 2014… and now they’ve returned via an expansion franchise for the the 2018-19 NLL season next year.
The new lacrosse team announced the name was the favourite of the three finalists announced back in September, the other options: Philadelphia Fire and Philadelphia Founders with over 5,000 votes selecting “Wings” as the winner.
“The Wings are clearly the favourite, and we’re happy to give the fans what they want,” said Lindsey Masciangelo, Executive Director of Business Operations, Philadelphia Wings in the official press release.
In addition to announcing the name, the Wings also unveiled their new logo for their first season back:
The logo was designed by GOBI Advertising, based out of Haddonfield, New Jersey and takes the shape of a “W” much like the two logos the previous Wings franchise, but that’s where the similarities end.

The logo also incorporates the letter “P” on either side of the “W”, sticking out from the side of the “P” are four feathers which is a nod to the logo of the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers. Neat.
What’s unusual about this logo is the negative space is open, so it takes on the colour of whatever background it appears on rather than being filled in with white. It gives the logo a whole new look depending on where it’s placed. The Wings will begin their first regular season back in the National Lacrosse League in December of 2018.
