The Omaha Storm Chasers will use the occasion of their 50th season to take a stroll through their past identities. The team will wear five throwback jerseys on Fridays throughout the season, each commemorating a decade from the franchise’s history. The Storm Chasers debuted in 1969 and went by the name of their longtime parent club, the Kansas City Royals, for most of their tenure before switching to the Storm Chasers in 2011.
The Storm Chasers will recognize their current decade with black jerseys that the team wore for five seasons from 2011 to 2015. The 2011 season was the team’s first as the Storm Chasers, and their first in their current home, Werner Park.
Next up, the Storm Chasers will reprise their longtime team name, the Royals, to reflect the 2000s. This iteration of Omaha Royals lasted from 2002 to 2010.
The team will remember a brief era that a lot of fans may want to forget. For three seasons, from 1999 to 2001, the franchise went by the nickname Golden Spikes, which drew a tenuous connection between the completion of the first transcontinental railroad and the city of Omaha. The problem is that while the transcontinental railroad goes through Omaha, that final golden spike was actually driven into the track at Promontory Summit, Utah, nearly 1,000 miles to the west. The team abandoned this nickname after it was poorly received by fans.
The 1980s will be represented with these Omaha Royals jerseys from 1985, the year the team’s big league club won the World Series.
And finally, the Storm Chasers will remember their first years as a franchise with these 1969 uniforms.
The Storm Chasers, Triple-A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals, will begin their 50th season April 5, 2018, when Pacific Coast League play opens for the season.
