The Philadelphia Phillies will wear throwback powder-blue uniforms for “select Thursday home games” in 2018, per an announcement from the team. A close look at the Phils’ schedule reveals that there are eight Thursday games in Philadelphia this season, including their home opener April 5, so based on the wording of the release, we can count on somewhere between two and seven throwback games.
Per the release: “Also new this season: Throwback Thursdays! On select Thursday home games the team will sport powder blue uniforms from the 1980s. More details for all of these throwback promos to come at a later date.”
The Phillies wore the powder blues on the road from 1973 to 1988, a span that included the franchise’s first World Series title in 1980, as well as a National League championship in 1983. The uniforms were worn by the likes of such storied Phillies as Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton, Pete Rose, and Steve Jeltz. The powder blues are a departure from the uniforms the Phillies wore for Thursday home games in 2016 and 2017, which were solid red.
The Phillies 2018 promotional schedule also includes commemorations of the 10th anniversary of the 2008 World Series champions and the 25th anniversary of the Lenny Dykstra-era 1993 National League champions.
