May the date be with you today as a simple speech impediment for some has turned into a celebration for others. Star Wars Day is here! Here’s a fun fact: of the twelve Star Wars theatrical releases, nine of them were released in the month of May… none of them on the 4th.
Star Wars has become a must-do jersey event among the various minor leagues across several sports in the last decade, the West Michigan Whitecaps were the first as far as we can tell who began the tradition in 2007 where it quickly caught on; if history is your thing you can check out this post I wrote five years ago after visiting the Buffalo Bisons on the night they were holding a Star Wars jersey game.
One benefit to this promotion being a few years old now is that we’re not seeing the same design across the board anymore, it was a bit of an embarrassing look a few seasons back when you’d see one design being recycled across five or six teams. Certainly no longer the case as teams are now developing their own unique Star Wars themed uniforms; take the Sugar Land Skeeters uniforms this year where they will also be wearing stormtrooper designs on their batting helmets. Nicely done.
Here’s a look at some of the many different looks being worn not just today but throughout the 2018 calendar year in honour of Star Wars. All photos are courtesy each team’s social media account.
