The West Virginia Black Bears, a Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate in the short-season single-A New York-Penn League, will change their name to the Moonshiners for three games later this season. The name change pays homage to the Appalachian region’s association with the production of the illicit alcohol—also called white liquor, white lightning, choop, hooch, and white whiskey.
Per the team, “The West Virginia Moonshiners series is a way for the Bears to play homage to the rich history of West Virginia. From replica cars to food items with a moonshine flair. Fans will be able to encompass themselves in the tradition in a variety of ways.”
The Moonshiners’ cap logo features the sort of Prohibition-era vehicle used to transport the contraband alcohol. The copper color found on the jerseys and caps represents the stills used to make moonshine.
The games will take place July 17-19 against the State College Spikes.
