In just about an hour, the Reading Fightin Phils will play their 17th annual morning game, and for the second year in a row, they’ll do so in an alternate, food-based identity, the Reading Whoopies. The history of Whoopie Pies in the region traces back to 18th-century German settlers, who established what is now Pennsylvania Dutch country, and brought with them their cream-filled chocolate cookie sandwiches.
The team is serving free hot dogs, whoopie pies, and coffee (presumably in the giveaway Whoopies mug) before the game. The Whoopies will take to the field wearing chocolate brown uniforms with caps meant to emulate the cream filling of the whoopie pie. A logo featuring what the team calls a “joyful whoopie pie” completes the ensemble.
The Whoopies, who typically play as the Double-A Phillies affiliate, the Fightin Phils, will take on the Richmond Flying Squirrels at 9:45 this morning.
