In season 2 of the IFC TV show “Brockmire,” Hank Azaria plays a disgraced former announcer for the Kansas City Royals whose career imploded after an on-air meltdown brought on by the discovery of his wife’s infidelity. Jim Brockmire’s attempt to revive his career take him through rural Pennsylvania as the in-stadium announcer for the Morristown Frackers (both the town and the team are fictional), then to New Orleans, where he becomes the play-by-play broadcaster for the Triple-A New Orleans Crawdaddy’s, whose grammatically incorrect apostrophe is just part of the team’s minor-league charm.
The real Triple-A team in New Orleans, the Baby Cakes, is partnering with IFC this season on promotional nights highlighting the Crawdaddy’s, during which the team wears uniforms from the show. It’s worth noting that in the TV show, the Crawdaddy’s are an affiliate of the Atlanta Braves, divisional rivals of the real-life Baby Cakes’ parent, the Marlins.
The Baby Cakes are rolling out the uniforms tonight for a match-up against the Fresno Tacos, who are themselves the alternate identity of the Fresno Grizzlies. (Minor League Baseball is amazing and weird and the best.) The jerseys are being auctioned off to benefit New Orleans’ American Cancer Society Hope Lodge.
