Ben Simmons’ 2018 NBA Rookie of Year Award may come with an additional perk most wouldn’t have thought, the opportunity to design a uniform for the Philadelphia 76ers.
Let’s turn the clock back a few months, Simmons, then just a month into his NBA career polled his Twitter followers in a since deleted Tweet asking if the Sixers should bring back their black Iverson-era uniforms. As you’d expect with any 90s uniform these days, the followers responded yes… very yes. According to a post on NBC Sports Philadelphia, the yeas had it 80-20.
The poll caught the attention of Sixers president Chris “Aw” Heck who responded with this offer:
That was in November 2017. Yesterday, on June 25th, Simmons won the Rookie of the Year Award.
Your move Mr. Heck.
If Heck keeps his word, could we see those black Sixers uniforms make a comeback as their official throwback uniform either this year or next? Or might Heck just give Simmons the opportunity to work with Nike on their annual “City Edition” uniform?
We’ll keep an eye on both Twitter accounts to see if either bring it up again, of course it’s entirely possible they both forgot this ever happened.
