The Richmond Flying Squirrels, Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, will pay tribute to Tom Petty, who died in October of last year, with uniforms evoking the artwork from his 1989 debut solo album, Full Moon Fever. The album, which hit number 3 on the Billboard 200, features such classics as “I Won’t Back Down,” “Free Fallin’,” and “Runnin’ Down a Dream,” one of which you are definitely now humming.
The jerseys emulate the album cover art’s gradient-blended stripes of magenta, yellow, and cyan, with type and a lineart logo in black (these are colors every print-centric graphic designer will recognize).
The game takes place Saturday, July 7, against the Akron RubberDucks, and will feature in-game musical performances by a Richmond-based Tom Petty tribute band called Full Moon Fever. The jerseys will be auctioned off during the game to benefit Flying Squirrels Charities.
