Edmonton Oilers Show Off Retro Uniform, 40th Anniversary Patch

So this morning the Edmonton Oilers unveiled their new throwback heritage uniform, it’s their home jersey from two seasons ago… that’s all, the only difference is that it’s now on the Adidas jersey cut. Because it’s not officially classified as an alternate or “third uniform” it’ll only be worn four times this year.

Arizona, New Jersey, Philadelphia, St Louis, and now… Edmonton. As it stands, only the Anaheim Ducks and Carolina Hurricanes have unveiled new uniform designs for the upcoming season, and those (even the leaked Islanders uniform) are based heavily off something the teams had once worn. I mean, that’s not a terrible thing, the world could use more throwbacks and retro nights sprinkled throughout the schedule (it’s a shame the league didn’t do this during the 100th anniversary season).

Edmonton is bringing back the long-buried uniform for the 2018-19 season to help celebrate the 40th anniversary of the team joining the NHL in 1979, it does not feature the new, darker blue the Oilers switched to for last season.

A new “40” patch will be worn on the shoulder of each of the home, road, and heritage jerseys; this logo features the club’s five Stanley Cup championships with a ribbon around it showing 1979 and 2019, the team’s retired jersey numbers 99, 17, 7, 31, 11, 9 are on the ribbon at the bottom of the logo while it looks like Al Hamilton’s #3 isn’t being included — likely because Hamilton’s contributions to the club were during their years in the WHA.

It’s hard to tell in the photos but it appears the patch is in the new darker blue/brighter orange on the home/road jerseys and in the retro colours (brighter blue) on the throwback.

The full schedule of when the Oilers will wear their “throwback” blue uniforms:

Thursday, November 29, 2018 vs. Los Angeles Kings
Sunday, December 9, 2018 vs. Calgary Flames
Monday, December 31, 2018 vs. Winnipeg Jets
Thursday, March 7, 2019 vs. Vancouver Canucks

Old-school hockey fans may notice all of the games are against former Smythe Division rivals.
