Once again, teams all across Major League Baseball will mark the anniversary of the September 11th, 2001 attacks on Washington and New York with the wearing of a commemorative patch.
For 9/11 this year, the twenty-nine teams based in the United States will wear a red-white-and-blue ribbon patch inside a blue circle on the side of the cap while the Toronto Blue Jays will wear a patch showing the flags of Canada and the United States crossed.
The league has worn a special cap on the anniversary each season since 2001, typically in the form of a flag patch, this is the first time they will wear MLB’s September 11, 2001 “We Shall Not Forget” ribbon logo.
Here’s a look at all thirty caps with their special 9/11 patches for 2018:
For games played (when play resumed) following the 11th in 2001 and then on every September 11th thereafter through 2007 teams wore a simple United States flag on the side of their cap. Beginning in 2008 teams would wear their “Stars and Stripes” cap designs on the 11th, this carried on until the tenth anniversary of the attacks in 2011 when they reverted back to the simple flag patch. In 2015 the flag was changed to a waving flag, this was the style worn right up until the switch to MLB’s 9/11 ribbon for 2018.
All on-field personnel including players, coaches and umpires will wear these caps during all games played September 11, 2018. Major League Baseball will donate 100% of its royalties from the sales of the caps to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, the Pentagon Memorial Fund, and the Flight 93 National Memorial.
