According to a series of leaked photos posted to Twitter, the Los Angeles Lakers will be wearing a purple uniform with black trim, numbers, and the full team name across the front of the chest for the yet-to-be-released “City Edition” uniform.
The uniform continues the Lakers “Lore” series of uniforms in which a different Lakers legend takes their turn designing a new “City Edition” team uniform. Last season the Lakers wore black and gold uniforms designed by Kobe Bryant, based on the photos of this design it’s safe to say Magic Johnson is the special guest designer for 2018-19.
Magic’s number “32” is featured on the waistband of the shorts, shown in the top right of the image above. The purple in the shorts and jerseys match, these are two different sources of photographs so the colours look off here.
Upon closer inspection, the pinstripes read “3x5xSHOWTIME”, a reference to the nickname given to the run-and-gun style of basketball the Lakers played during the Magic Johnson era, 3x for the amount of NBA MVP Awards Magic won, and 5x for the NBA Championships.
We’re still unsure when the City Edition uniforms will be officially unveiled across the league, but if they’re starting to leak it must be soon. The first appearance of any NBA City Edition uniform on the court this year will be on November 9th.
