I never meant to cause you any sorrow, I never meant to cause you any pain… I only wanted to see an NBA uniform leak again.
Today it was the Minnesota Timberwolves with their apparent tribute to Minneapolis-native musician/songwriter Prince, who died in Minnesota two years ago.
Thanks to a Tweet via @TwolvesFRA we see a black jersey with “WOLVES” scrawled across the top in purple and white, the numbers below in the same colour and font style. Both the colour of this and the lettering are very reminiscent of the album cover for Prince’s hit album Purple Rain, released in 1984.
(UPDATE Oct 23/18): We’ve now seen the shorts that accompany this uniform courtesy a post on Reddit, I’ve updated the graphic to include the new image:
The shorts make this more of a “City Edition” with an “MPLS”, shorthand for Minneapolis both the hometown of the Timberwolves and The Former Artist Formerly Known As the Artist Formerly Known As Prince.
According to Wikipedia, the album “Purple Rain” is regularly ranked among the best albums in music history and is widely regarded as Prince’s magnum opus. In 2012, the album was added to the Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry list of sound recordings in the United States that “are culturally, historically, or aesthetically important”.
We have been told the jersey shown in the Tweet is legit and will be the Timberwolves “City Edition” uniform for the 2018-19 season, expected to be unveiled along with the rest of the league in the second week of November 2018.
The Twolves leak follows City Edition leaks of the Lakers, Raptors, Rockets, Bulls, Pistons, Celtics, Warriors, and probably more — honestly, I can’t remember them all at this point (heck, two more leaked while I was writing this story).
