Lakers Unveil Magic Johnson Tribute Uniforms

The Los Angeles Lakers tonight officially unveiled their new “City Edition” uniforms four weeks after they first leaked out.

For their “City Edition” series, instead of focusing on L.A., the Lakers have chosen to instead honour important players in their franchise’s history, they’re referring to this as their “Lore Series” uniform. Last year Kobe Bryant was the focus, this year it’s Magic Johnson.

The uniform, which the Lakers are saying was designed by Magic, is purple with black elements throughout — wordmark, number, pinstripes, trim around the collar and sleeves, waistband, and striping down the shorts. The wordmark across the chest features the full name of the team, something you don’t see too often in the NBA.

There are all sorts of little nods to Johnson throughout, the pinstripes read “3x5xShowtime” which are references to the amount of Magic’s MVP Awards, NBA Championships, and the nickname of the Lakers team during his era.

On the waistband of the shorts is Magic’s number 32, naturally retired by the Lakers, on top of a tonal “M” modified to resemble the “LAKERS” famous italic wordmark. Under the flap of the shorts on one pant leg is “MAGIC” arched over a 32 and “BELIEVE” under the other. Magic’s signature also appears at the jock tag.

The Lakers are set to debut their new purple and black uniforms on November 14th at home against the Portland Trail Blazers, the full schedule below:
