Yes, it’s true, the Texas Rangers are getting set to move into a brand new ballpark, but before they do, they’ll take a season to remember Arlington’s historic Globe Life Park In Arlington located in Arlington.
Throughout the upcoming 2019 season, the Rangers will wear a commemorative patch honouring that old barn built in the later part of the 20th century on the right sleeve of their home white and alternate red jerseys – note that it will not be worn on their grey or blue jerseys, nor will it be worn on any of the team’s caps.
The patch shows the brick façade of Globe Life Park’s main entrance, a red banner below reads “FINAL SEASON”, two pennants with the opening and closing dates of the ballpark flying above, all of this sits on a blue diamond.
There are two versions of the logo, one which simply reads “FINAL SEASON” on the banner and another with the full corporate name of the ballpark – to get around Major League Baseball’s restriction of corporate names on on-field jerseys the sleeve patch omits the name of the stadium. This is not unique to this patch or situation, it has always been like this on ballpark-related patches in MLB.
The logo will also be printed on the official in-game Major League Baseballs used during games played at Globe Life Park in 2019.
The Rangers used similar elements (blue diamond, banner, “T” logo on a home plate) on their logo used for the final season at Arlington Stadium in 1993, possibly an intentional homage to that? It’s also possible it’s just a coincidence:
Globe Life Park opens its final season on March 28th when the Rangers take on the Chicago Cubs, the final game there will be played on September 29th against the New York Yankees. The Rangers will move into the similarly named Globe Life Field located just across the street in 2020.
