The Philadelphia Union this morning unveiled the new design for their secondary jersey to be worn during the upcoming 2019 MLS season.
With a white base, the jersey features navy trim around the collar and cuffs, on the sponsor logo, and for the three Adidas-style stripes up each side instead of the single solid navy stripe. A radial design stems from the snake logo in the lower left.
As an added tribute in honour of the club’s tenth season this year, the jersey has added customizable back tags – players have the option of choosing between one of ten different back tags. These ten tags were chosen by the fans and designed by local athletes and influencers including supporter group the Sons of Ben.
“We’re a club founded by fans and we wanted these kits to reflect that in our 10th season,” said Doug Vosik, Union Senior Vice President of Marketing and Communications. “It’s fitting that we found inspiration for a design directly from our supporter group, The Sons of Ben, and fans. Over the years, The Sons of Ben have used sun radial designs frequently in their tifos, in addition to their in-stadium street art mural, a fan-favourite photo moment on game day. To honour all fans, we invited them into the design process by enabling them to vote on hundreds of back tag designs to decide on the final ten options for the secondary jersey.”
A welcome change to this kit over Philadelphia’s jerseys in the past is the colour of the sponsor logo, now single coloured to just blue or white to better match the overall design, previously the Bimbo logo had been red, white, and blue which didn’t pair well with the Union’s simple blue and gold design. The primary kit from 2018 comes back unchanged other than the additional colours stripped from that sponsor logo.
This new jersey will be available to the public on February 9th, the team will hold a kit launch party that evening with fans and media invited to attend, Union players will be on hand for the event.
