Hey kids, remember “Stinger”? No, not the mascot, the logo.
When the Columbus Blue Jackets first announced their name in 1998, two years prior to their inaugural season in the NHL, the team also unveiled a logo. This logo featured a yellowjacket wearing a union soldier’s blue coat from the American Civil War. Get it? It’s a yellowjacket wearing a blue jacket. For whatever reason, the Blue Jackets demoted their logo to an alternate prior to taking the ice, replacing it with a CBJ star-filled insignia, the head of the yellowjacket from that original logo made it to the shoulder of the first Blue Jackets jersey.
Well, now thanks to new Blue Jackets goaltender Keith Kinkaid, the Stinger logo is back!
Kinkaid, who joined the Columbus Blue Jackets three weeks ago when he was dealt from the New Jersey Devils on February 25th, recently revealed the new paint job for his mask on his Instagram profile, the original Blue Jackets logo in all its blue, red, and electric neon green glory takes up the entire front-left side of the mask. The right side features the team’s current logo, an Ohio flag wrapped around a star in the shape of a “C”.
The mask was painted by Dave Gunnarsson of daveart.
While waiting for the new lid, Kinkaid had been wearing his old Team USA mask design with a Blue Jackets logo decal stuck onto the side.
