If you’re not exhausted from Minor League Baseball’s unveiling of 72 Copa de la Diversion identities, there’s more temporary baseball brand news to share. The Carolina League’s Down East Wood Ducks will commemorate their hometown’s Agriculture/Farm Appreciation Weekend by playing three games at the Kinston Collard Greens. The so-called “Farm Team” name (get it?) is an homage to a prominent crop in the region.
“More than any other item, Collard Greens are associated with the rich history of agriculture and farming in eastern North Carolina,” said Wood Ducks/Collard Greens Vice President, Wade Howell, quoted on Kinston.com. “So we felt like it was a great ‘Farm Team’ identity for the Wood Ducks to use to celebrate the men and women that are working in the industry.”
The team unveiled classic-looking uniforms and an old-timey logo reminiscent of the the Cincinnati Reds Mr. Redlegs—except where Mr. Redlegs has a collar and mustache, this guy has collard greens, a leafy vegetable closely related to cabbage, broccoli, and kale, and a staple of southern cooking.
The Wood Ducks, a Single-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, will take on the temporary nickname June 6–8.
