As a way to raise awareness of marine plastic pollution, the University of Miami and adidas on Thursday afternoon unveiled the first-ever baseball jerseys that utilize repurposed and upcycled materials.
The jerseys — which are made from a range of materials collected on beaches and in coastal communities in partnership with Parley for the Oceans — are orange with green sleeves and the Miami wordmark across the front. Players will also wear cleats made from upcycled plastic materials.
From adidas’ press release:
Crafted with the environment in mind and engineered for elite performance, the adidas x Parley Miami baseball jerseys feature 100% recycled polyester mesh. The result is a durable yet breathable jersey material that adheres to the drags, sprints and swings necessary for a player’s optimal movement and fast journeys around the diamond.
You may recall the Hurricanes’ football team wore parley uniforms for its 2018 season-opener against LSU.
Miami (28-14, 11-10 in the ACC) will wear the eco-friendly uniforms on Friday evening against Virginia Tech. First pitch at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
