The California burrito is a cultural phenomenon that is near and dear to the people of southern California, particularly San Diego. The California burrito is basically what would happen if traditional Mexican food got a DNA test and discovered to its surprise that 30 percent of its ancestry is from Pittsburgh. It has all the trappings that you would expect from a burrito—carne asada, cheese, guacamole or sour cream (depending on who you ask), and salsa fresca—but its defining ingredient, French fries, is decidedly not Mexican.
The Single-A Inland Empire 66ers, who play in San Bernardino, which is closer to LA than San Diego, but still well within California burrito territory, teased a promotion that pays homage to the Mexi-Cali delicacy on social media. We don’t know for certain that the team will be playing a game as the California Burritos, but if they are, it would be an appropriate geographic identifier, since their parent club is the Los Angeles Angels, who of course once played as the California Angels.
The tease gives us only Will Ferrell’s voice from the movie Anchorman saying, “This burrito is delicious but it is filling,” followed by a snippet of the song “Apache (Jump On It)” by the Sugarhill Gang, then the text, both ominous and inviting: “May 25. Come Hungry.”
Obviously, our crack minor league promo news team will stay on top of this story, like salsa fresca on a flour tortilla wrapped around carne asada, cheese, and guac.
