Earlier this season, the Rochester Red Wings hosted the Pawtucket Red Sox for Deaf Culture Day April 28. As part of the game’s commemoration of the deaf community, Rochester wore uniforms with illustrations of hands forming letters in American Sign Language.
Later this season, the PawSox will host the Red Wings for their own Deaf Awareness Night, which will feature similar American Sign Language uniforms. Like the Red Wings’ promotion, the PawSox’s event will be held in partnership with the Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf, a technological college for deaf and hard-of-hearing people. The game will highlight educational activities and the National Anthem being performed in sign language.
Last season, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans were the first team to promote deaf awareness with sign language uniforms, a well-received promotion that set the standard for these that have followed.
The PawSox Deaf Awareness Night will be held June 7.
