Southern Illinois Introduces New, Streamlined Logo

Southern Illinois University unveiled a new logo earlier this year that gives the Saluki a more streamlined appearance than its dated predecessor.

“The Saluki is unique throughout collegiate athletics,” athletic director Jerry Kill said. “Our goal with the new logo was to retain the original look and feel of the Saluki, while giving it a sleeker, modern feel … We just felt like it represented our university, and represented a Saluki.”

The new logo — which replaces the mark used since 2001 — is set to be phased into Southern Illinois’ 17 sports programs over the next few years. That includes new turf at Saluki Stadium and a new court at SIU Arena, on which work began earlier this month.

Kill, the former associate athletic director at Kansas State, said the Wildcats’ iconic Power Cat had a significant influence on the design of the Salukis’ new logo.

“Me being there and seeing the Power Cat, the whole town bought into it. I’m hoping with our new logo that we can get everybody to buy into it,” Kill said. “Inspirational-wise, what it’s done for that campus and that town, it was incredible. I’m hoping that we can take this journey and continue it on for a long time.”

The process of choosing a new logo began three years ago under the direction of former athletic director Tommy Bell, who solicited input from university employees, student-athletes, coaches and members of the local community. The final version, designed by Torch Creative, was selected by Kill and the chancellor’s office last fall.

“We are excited about the new logo and what it means for the future of the Salukis brand,” said IMG vice president of partner services Denise Lamb. “The updated, streamlined approach stays true to the history and tradition of SIU while meeting the increased demand for flexibility across digital and social platforms that is needed by top universities.”
