The 2019 Stanley Cup Final between the St. Louis Blues and Boston Bruins begins tonight out of the TD Garden in Boston, so we’re looking back at Stanley Cup Finals over the years.
Today I’m updating a graphic I first made back in 2017 showing the different sock designs worn by the finalists in each Cup Final since the dawn of the NHL in 1918.
Kinda looks like a nautical flag chart, doesn’t it? It also helped me notice that yellow/gold has now been present in four straight Cup Finals – and worn by five of the last six teams to make the final.
Each matchup features the primary dark sock design for each team, it also places the Eastern or Wales representative on the left and the Western or Campbell team on the right in seasons in which the playoffs were split by division/conference.
