It will be a battle of the turtles in the high-A Florida State League when the Jupiter Hammerheads rebrand as the Loggerheads for one game against the Daytona Tortugas. The promotion will benefit the nonprofit Loggerhead Marinelife Center, located less than five miles from the Hammerheads’ ballpark.
The so-called Turtle War June 1 will feature in-game activities related to ocean and sea conservation, with proceeds from ticket sales and a jersey auction supporting the Loggerhead Marinelife Center, a sea turtle hospital that promotes conservation, focusing specifically on threatened and endangered sea turtles.
Loggerhead sea turtles are, of course, amazing and adorable animals whose populations have dwindled because of human encroachment on habitat, hunting, and climate change, among other factors. They’re listed as vulnerable by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature threatened under the US Endangered Species Act.
