FC Barcelona: New Home Kit Inspired By Eixample District

FC Barcelona unveiled a brand new home kit on Monday afternoon that deviates from its traditional striped jersey and will instead feature a checkerboard print for the first time in club history.

The new design is inspired by the gridded streetscape of the city’s Eixample District, home to some of the most iconic buildings and most diverse restaurants and nightlife in the country.

“Barcelona is a club with a bold and adventurous philosophy and that resonates throughout the city,” said Nike football apparel senior design director Pete Hoppins.

Barcelona’s home kits have featured vertical stripes in all but one season since the club’s inception, the Blaugrana used horizontal stripes in 2015-16.

“The kit is something new and exciting,” said defender Gerard Piqué. “It might be different, but it is 100 percent Barca. And it is even better that the design represents the bond the club has with the supporters and the people who are driving the city forward.”

The home kit is complete with blue shorts and blue socks topped with red trim. Another minor change includes the Catalan flag — which is usually located at the back of the neck — being positioned on the front of the collar.

Barcelona’s new home kit will be available to the general public on June 4.
