It’s been 15 years since the late Patches O’Houlihan, former champion of the American Dodgeball Association of America (ADAA), bequeathed us with this wisdom: “If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball.” That bit of dodgeball insight, along with a demanding coaching style that would make Bob Knight proud, led the Average Joe’s, a ragtag band of dodgeball neophytes, to an unlikely ADAA championship.
The Wilmington Blue Rocks, Single-A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals, will pay homage to the landmark anniversary of the movie Dodgeball by playing a game this month as the Average Rocks. The team’s uniforms evoke those worn by the dodgeball legends featured in the movie, like Dwight Baumgarten, Steve “The Pirate” Cowan, and Coach Pete LaFleur. The Average rocks will wear yellow shirts with red collar and stripes, and a script that is similar (though not identical) to that used in the movie.
The Average Rocks will take the field Saturday, June 22, against the Frederick Keys.
