Nos Amours will return to Major League Baseball early next month, but not in Montreal, not in Canada, and only for one (quite glorious) afternoon.
According to a story in The Washington Post, the Washington Nationals will turn back the clock while handing over their passport to the proper authorities when they don the uniforms of the 1969 Montreal Expos on July 6th.
Hey, if the Carolina Hurricanes can wear Hartford Whalers uniforms, why not this?
The Nationals are wearing the Expos uniforms in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the inaugural season of the Expos/Nationals franchise, the club beginning as an expansion team during the 1969 season alongside the San Diego Padres, Seattle Pilots (recently celebrated by the Mariners), and their opponent for the game the Kansas City Royals.
Despite being the home team, Washington has chosen to go with the Expos road powder blue uniform for the game, the same style as was worn in 1969 (no racing stripes on the sleeves, sorry). The famous tri-colour pinwheeled cap will also be worn. The Royals will counter with their 1969 road grey uniform giving us an all-road uniform ’69 throwback.
According to the article, the Nationals will offer Canadian-themed food at the event such as (what they’ll call) poutine, and Montreal smoked meat sandwiches. Legendary Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero, Sr. will also be on hand.
Washington’s throwback to the 1969 Expos season takes place on July 6th against the Kansas City Royals.
