Iowa Hawkeyes Unveil Bold Gold Alternate Football Uniform

The Iowa Hawkeyes on Thursday evening unveiled gold alternate uniforms that will be worn during their game against Penn State on Oct. 12.

The new threads — which will be paired with a black helmet with an oversized Tigerhawk on both sides, enlarged gold stripe and gold face mask — pays homage to the Hawkeyes’ short-lived Apex “banana peel” design from 1994-95. The colors are flipped on the feather design, though, so the comparison won’t be as apt this time around.

“One of the big things coming out of just kind of talking to Iowa and where we wanted to go with this uniform was the idea of doing a gold uniform,” Nike digital artist Justin Tague said. “(That) in itself was kind of a bold ask in the fact that it’s gonna be the first time that a gold uniform has been worn on the field (by Iowa).

“Taking that — and then with the fact that the uniform that it’s inspired from was a bold uniform from its era — and I feel like ahead of its time … being gold and just really doing a bold, inspired uniform with bold graphics is really gonna, hopefully, excite people.”

Iowa has worn all-black alternate uniforms in the past, including during a 55-24 thrashing of then sixth-ranked Ohio State in 2017 and a 40-35 win over Minnesota in 2015. This is quite the departure from those more conservative alternates, however.
